- Donate blood six times - tried but unable to complete
- I used to donate blood regularly when I was in college. It's such an easy thing to do, but it does a lot of good. It's also something Daddy always used to do, but I'm not sure if he still does -- something to ask him about.
- Leave a note in a book for someone to find - completed January 23, 2013
- This has a lot of appeal because of the though of affecting someone else's life. I think the trick is deciding what to say -- what tone should the note have? It could easily go very cheesy.
- Go to a concert by myself (not the symphony) - completed May 31, 2013
- I have missed so many concerts that I would love to see (i.e. Eric Clapton), because I didn't have anyone to go with for one reason or another. Just like anything else I do by myself, I shouldn't be missing out on something I love just for lack of another person. It might be uncomfortable at first, but it will be worth it!
- Can something or make pickles/jam/jelly - completed August 8, 2013
- I've done a lot of cooking, but canning something seems like a lot of work and very difficult. But it also seems like it would be very satisfying. I bought a kit at the State Fair, so hopefully that will help.
- Make a will and a living will
- This is something I believe everyone should have, and I'm certainly not getting any younger. I hate the idea of having to get a lawyer, though. How does one go about finding a lawyer?
- Send a secret to Post Secret - completed January 15, 2013
- I've been fascinated by this website for years, so it only seems right that I should participate. I always thought I didn't have any secrets that were interesting enough to submit, but I think that the point of that project is that people are not alone -- it's amazing how many people relate to something that the submitter probably thought was theirs alone. Besides, I do have a few good ones.
- Get a massage
- This is a lot about being comfortable with my body. About having someone else touch me. Plus, I am really ticklish, so I don't know if I would be able to relax enough to enjoy it.
- Go on a road trip - completed July 15, 2013
- This may be hard because of being able to take off enough time to make it worthwhile. I'd love to follow the old Route 66.
- No fast food for a month - completed October 6, 2011
- I eat entirely too much fast food. I know that it's expensive and very unhealthy, but it's quick, easy, and usually very tasty. I'm hoping that by giving it up for a month, that will be long enough to help break the cycle. This one will be hard for me.
- Attend the midnight premiere of a movie - completed July 14/15, 2011
- I've always thought this would be fun, so why not do it?!?
- Volunteer on a Habitat House - completed May 10, 2012
- I think Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful organization, and I like the idea of being able to actually do something for someone. I think I haven't done this before now because I don't have any skills that would be useful. And because of my shyness.
- Renew my passport - completed January 29, 2011
- Out of sight, out of mind. This one of those things I just keep forgetting to do.
- Not log-in to Facebook for two weeks - completed March 1, 2011
- I have a bad habit of logging in and then wasting hours on Facebook. This is probably one that I should do more than once!
- Watch only one hour of TV per day for a month - completed June 27, 2013
- Yet another bad habit. If I'm home, then the TV is usually on. I don't think TV's necessarily a bad thing, but I should watch less of it. This will be an interesting challenge, since I'm placing a limit rather than cutting it out entirely.
- Eat dinner at my dining room table every night for a week - three times - x1
- I pretty much always eat sitting on the sofa in front of the TV. I'm hoping this will help me enjoy my meal more and be be more aware of what I'm eating.
- Finish decorating my bedroom
- If I don't put a time limit on this, it will never get done. And I want to enjoy my beautiful new house! And make it a home.
- Finish knitting Grandpa's afghan
- It's been more than two years. That's just ridiculous. I want him to be able to use it before he dies.
- Get a facial
- A little bit like getting a massage, this is partially about not wanting someone touching me. Also, I'm afraid they'll mess up my skin. And they're expensive.
- Buy something from Etsy - completed January 1, 2011
- It's a great way to support artists. There is some beautiful stuff on that site!
- Watch a meteor shower - completed October 21, 2012 and December 13, 2012
- I've never seen one, and I think I should.
- Try making cheese - completed January 15, 2012
- I love cheese, so this would be a lot of fun. I just recently found out this is something you can do at home. And if it ends up tasting good, then even better!
- Put away $10 for every goal completed - completed September 2013
- Individually, this is a tiny bit of money, but it will add up to a pretty big sum. (kind of like the effect of this project on my life!) Trying to decide what to do with the total amount will be fun!
- Get a mammogram
- I'm already the age my mother was when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I should have done this a long time ago. Partially I hate having to find a doctor, and partially I'm a little bit scared.
- Go to the dentist - completed August 24, 2011
- I'm not one of those people who is afraid of the dentists, so I don't know why I keep putting this off. Guess I just hate hearing that I should be flossing.
- Tip someone 100% - completed April 14, 2012
- What a fun way to hopefully put a big smile on someone's face. But now I'm going to be evaluating all my waiters/waitresses to see who's worthy.
- Take a foreign language class - completed April 2013
- Two years of high school Spanish and a six-week adult ed French class do not up to being fluent in anything, which has always been a life goal for me. It will probably be French, but I need to pick a language and go for it.
- Visit a financial advisor - completed July 19, 2012
- This is another one of those grown-up adult things that I should have done before now. But I don't know how to find a good one, and I don't want to give control of my money to a virtual stranger.
- Get contact lenses - completed July 7, 2011
- I had contacts for four years in high school and college, but they seemed like too much trouble at the time. I've always thought I looked better with glasses anyway. But I want to make sure I'm not hiding behind the glasses. And I want to be able to buy some of the cute non-prescription sunglasses out there!
- Try false eyelashes
- Because every girl needs a little extra glamour in her life sometimes
- Attend an opera - completed December 8, 2012
- I'm not generally fond of opera, but I think I need to see one in person before I write it off altogether.
- Complete a 1000-piece puzzle - completed August, 2012
- I like jigsaw puzzles, but I usually never have the patience to see a big one through to completion.
Have the kids over to spend the night- One of the first things they said when they saw the house was when could they spend the night. I have to admit that it makes me a little nervous, but I'm supposed to be the fun Auntie, right?!?
- Make a $1000 donation to Butler - completed March 9, 2012
- It's a good school. I want to do something good for them. I also kind of want to see my name in the alumni magazine under the Ovid Society section.
- Take a cooking class
- I've wanted to do this for a long time, because I can follow a recipe but I don't feel like I actually have any cooking skills. And maybe if I learn some tips to do it better and easier/faster then I will want do it more often.
- Make a Day Zero scrapbook
- Because I want to have a way to go back and look at what I've accomplished. I'm a pen and paper person, so I need to have something I can hold and see.
- Send all birthday cards/gifts on time for a year - completed August 2013
- The older I get the worse I've been about this. It's embarrassing for me and hurtful to the people I love. It needs to stop.
- Complete a 365 day photo challenge
- I like taking pictures, but I'm not good about doing it regularly. This will also help me become a better photographer (hopefully) and help me remember to look at everything around me.
- Memorize a poem
- I've always been impressed by people who can recite poetry. I'm horrible at memorizing things though, so this will be a challenge for me.
- Make something on my sewing machine - completed
- The sewing machine. Early attempts by my mother to teach me how to use it ended mostly in screaming and frustration, but a last-ditch effort a few years ago actually resulted in a usable tote bag. I think I owe it to her and myself to try again. Of course, I'll have to remember how it works!
- Organize my digital music - completed September 20, 2011
- After my PDA stopped functioning, I've never taken the time to choose a new device and get it all functional again. I love music and am working to make a much larger part of my life again.
- No dirty dishes laying around for six weeks - completed January 7, 2012
- It is truly pitiful that I had to make this a goal. I don't know why I seem to have such a difficult time putting my dishes in the dishwasher!
- Buy a bicycle - completed April 24, 2013
- This has two purposes. The first is part of my ongoing effort to be more green and eco-friendly. Since moving into this house, there are a lot of places that would be within easy biking distance. The second is, of course, for fitness reasons. I used to love riding my bike as a kid, but I don't want to think about the sight of my behind now on a bicycle seat.
- Write a letter to my grandparents every month completed September 2013
- I am very bad about letting time get away from me, and I am very lucky to still have one set of grandparents alive. I know hearing from me more often would mean a lot to them. I regret not communicating better with my other grandparents, especially just before they died, and I don't want to have that same regret again.
- Start savings accounts for the kids - completed March 26, 2011
- These are my godchildren -- probably the closest I'll ever get to having children of my own. And since I have the means to do so, I would like to help provide for their futures.
- Find new music to listen to - completed 2011
- I love music. But it's easy to get in a rut, and there is a lot of good music out there. I just need to find it.
Stop drinking pop for a month - three times (x1)Limit pop to two per week for a month - two times- I'm not in it for the caffeine... I just love the fizz! Sometimes I just get into cycles of drinking too much pop, mostly because of all the fast food and buying lunch at work. This is to help snap me out of those cycles.
- Don't spend any money (outside of bills and groceries) for two weeks - three times - completed
- I think this will take some planning. It's one thing to stick to a budget, but it's another to not spend any money at all. I hope this will make me aware of all the little mindless spending.
- Bake a pie from scratch
- I've made cakes, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and eclairs all from scratch. Time to tackle the pie crust.
- Start a garden
- In my head I would love to have a full-blown vegetable garden, but in reality I would be happy to have a few herbs. This will be the first time I can plant things in the actual ground instead of pots, and I want to make sure to take full advantage.
- Start composting
- I'm not in love with the idea of keeping trash around, but I think this is the next step in my eco journey.
- Get an energy consultation for my house
- This house was built in 1941. I know it can't possibly be 100% energy efficient. It will be good for the environment, and it will also help me become more familiar with my house. I don't want to make stupid mistakes down the road or run into problems because there were things I didn't know about.
- Visit three states I haven't been to before - completed July 12, 2013
- I was recently appalled to find out that I've only been to 22 states. I really thought it was more than that. This will at least get me to the half-way point.
- Visit the Butler observatory
- It's kind of pitiful that I was there for six years and never went to the observatory.
- Pick pumpkins from a patch - completed October 27, 2013
- It always looks like so much fun in the pictures! Plus fall is my favorite season, and there are plenty of pumpkin patches nearby.
- Plant rosebushes - changed to peonies - completed
- Roses are beautiful. And with some of the new varieties that are available now, maybe I can manage not to kill them.
- Play my clarinet - completed July 29, 2012
- Now that I have the house, I feel like I can play without disturbing anyone. Which is a good thing, because after not playing for almost ten years, this is going to be painful.
Floss every day for a month - three timesBrush teeth in the morning and before bedtime for a month - three times - x2- This goes back to the dentist thing. I hate flossing, but I want to keep my teeth.
- Change the oil in my car by myself
- Here is another one that has to do with being independent and self-sufficient. I know how to check the oil and change a tire. Now I want to be one of those women who can say I've changed the oil in my car.
- Find out twelve friends' favorite movies and watch them - x1
- This will be an interesting way to learn more about my friends and maybe see a few movies I haven't seen before.
- Keep a list of the books I've - completed September 2013
- I've done this before but it kind of trickled off. It's fun and interesting to look back over what I've read.
- Talk to or e-mail my dad at least once every two weeks - completed September 2013
- I talk to my mother nearly every day, but she's the parent that drives me crazier.. After the divorce, my relationship with my dad changed and became somewhat strained. I don't really know why. Like correspondence with my grandparents, time slips by too easily sometimes without contact, so I'm hoping this will help bring us closer together again.
- Invite my neighbors over
- One of the things I was really looking for when house hunting was a nice neighborhood where you actually saw and talked to the people who live around you. I found a great neighborhood, and I've met quite a few of my neighbors, but I want to take it a step further. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate, but I want to reach out. This will definitely be pushing myself beyond my comfort zone!
- Have the porch finished - completed June 4, 2011
- I had really intended and wanted to have this done this summer. I even have all the supplies that are needed. But because of some delays with the handyman and then my own procrastination, I still have an unfinished porch. I know this will make me feel good, and I'll be able to enjoy it even more than I did this summer.
- Hire someone to clean my house at least once
- It's always been a dream/fantasy of mine to have someone come clean my house on a regular basis. But it seems like such an extravagant expense, and the concept of paying someone to clean my house does bother me on some level. Also, I'm not sure of the best way to go about finding someone. But I've been finding out that I know quite a few people who have their houses cleaned, so now it will be my turn. No better time than the present!
- Write a fan letter - completed
- I don't generally think of myself as the fan letter type, but there have been two authors in particular who I often thought of writing to but didn't, and now they are both dead and I'll never have the chance to tell them how much their books meant to me. I think people like to hear when they have helped or touched someone, and I should do that. Even if it's someone famous who doesn't know me from Adam. (Madeline L'Engle and Kurt Vonnegut)
- Make a list of 15 books to read and read them - x12
- I love books and read a lot, but there are some basics I've seemed to miss over the years. I tried to choose a mix of new and old classics.
- Make a list of ten movies to watch and watch them - completed January 5, 2013
- Like the books, there are some classics that I have somehow never seen. Hopefully this will fix some of that!
- Finish all of the PSAP chapters
- I signed up to do the PSAP chapters as a bit of a challenge for myself -- to see whether I would keep up with them if I ever got BCPS certified. So far I have failed miserably. I think this is the only thing on my list that directly has to do with my career. It's important to me to be a good pharmacist. Time to get back on track.
- Do something fabulous and fun for my 40th birthday - completed July 7-14, 2012
- It's my 40th birthday -- of course it should be fun and fabulous! I've never really had a real birthday party. So this doesn't necessarily need to be a party, but it is a major milestone and should be duly celebrated.
- Figure out all the perks of my phone and set it up to use at work - completed February 10, 2013
- I sometimes like to pretend that I'm all cool and current with technology, and my current cell phone was one of those moments. I've had it for over a year and basically use only three or four functions. I need to suck it up, sit down, and figure out what all this thing can do. At the very least, it will help me out at work.
- Decorate my house for three holidays during one year - completed
- It's pretty much out of sheer laziness that I don't decorate, even though I always like the results when I do. Now that I have an actual house, all my really good excuses are pretty much gone. This will help me enjoy life more fully.
- Do all my knee exercises for both knees every day for a month
- If there's something I can do to allow myself to be in less pain, and I know it works, and it will postpone the inevitability of surgery, then I need to do it. Period.
- Try one new recipe every month - completed September 2013
- This is a prompt to get myself cooking more. I have a ton of cookbooks and clipped out recipes, and I like to cook. This will be fun!
- Try geocaching
- I've been reading about this for years but haven't tried it yet. It sounds like fun, and it would probably be a good activity to do with the kids.
- Drive a convertible with the top down
- I love driving. I really love driving fast. Driving a convertible with the top down just seems like the ultimate driving experience!
- Shoot a gun
- I don't like guns. I strongly support gun control. With the possible exception of hunting, I don't think there is any need for a person to own a gun. Especially hand guns. But I have never held or shot a gun, and I think that I should. I guess it's kind of a "know your enemy" thing.
- Leave flowers on three random graves - completed May 31, 2012
- I drive by the country's third largest cemetery every day, and I often wonder about all the people who are buried there. Since I have so very little family and only a few close friends, I sometimes think about how there won't be anyone to visit my grave when I die. So this is just my way of showing that a few random people are being thought of. It's not meant to be morbid, but the idea of never being remembered after you're gone is a little sad.
- Get Ray's headstone fixed - completed July 21, 2012
- When my grandparents died, it was a bad time. And then the stone cutters didn't do the design right on Ray's headstone. My mother has talked off and on over the years about getting it fixed, and I have thought about it too, but it hasn't been done. In fact, neither of us has been back to the cemetery since his funeral. But I would like to take care of this.
- Learn how to play my Lego games on the Wii
- I asked for and received these last Christmas, but I really have no idea how to play them. And they look like so much fun!
- Finish unpacking all my boxes
- I've been here for six months and have made a fair dent in the unpacking process. I think 33 more months is perfectly reasonable as a time table to finish. This is my permanent house, so there is absolutely no excuse not to unpack every single box.
- Have a yard sale - completed August 10, 2013
- After all that unpacking, there are bound to be some things I don't want or need anymore. I usually donate things, but it would be nice to may be make a little money this time around.
- Take a multivitamin daily for two months - completed March 21, 2011
- I always say that everyone can benefit from taking a daily multivitamin. I'm certainly not exempt from that. And I'm hoping that by the end of two months it will have become a habit, and it will continue on. The real challenge here will be the act of swallowing the tablet, which is something I have trouble doing. It would be nice if someone made half-strength vitamins, and then I could take two smaller tablets.
- Spend a whole day in a bookstore(s) - completed June 22, 2013
- This seems like such and indulgent luxury for someone who loves books and reading as much as I do. So what's wrong with giving into such a harmless vice just this once?
- Walk a labyrinth - completed June 12, 2012
- I've always been fascinated by the designs of labyrinths. And since I have been exploring different aspects of spirituality, they have taken on additional layers of mystique. I think there are a few in the area, so I want to try it and see if it does anything for me. This is actually something I plan to do several times, but I want to be doing it because I want to, not because I wrote it on a list. It's on the list just so I don't keep postponing the first time.
Ride a roller coaster- I think the last time I rode a roller coaster was in college at King's Island. They are on of those things that I dread the whole time I'm standing in line, but then love in the moment. There's probably a life lesson in there somewhere. The other deeper darker reason I haven't been on a roller coaster or even put myself to be in a position of getting on any amusement park rides is because of my weight. I can't imagine a greater embarrassment than having to get off a ride because I don't fit. So this is the only item on the list that has to do with weight loss. And then I'm going to get past the nerves and remember how much I like the ride.
- See a dermatologist about my redness - completed July 10, 2013
- For my entire life I've hated how red my face is. It's not rosacea, but I've read enough articles to feel like there might be a treatment for it. After living with it for almost 40 years, it's time to find a dermatologist and see what they say.
- Volunteer for the same organization five times - completed October 20, 2012
- I make donations, but I also feel like it would be better to actually do something. This is one of those times when I usually allow my shyness to overcome me and I don't go back. I'm hoping if I find something I really believe in, then that will overcome my desire to run and hide.
- Get a makeup lesson after getting contacts - completed August 6, 2011
- It's taken me this long to half-way figure out makeup with glasses. If I'm going to get contacts, then I need to complete the whole look.
- Take donated clothes to Dress for Success - completed June 29, 2012
- I've been meaning to do this for over a year. They're not doing anyone any good sitting in my closet.
- Buy lottery tickets at least once a month
- Sometimes I fantasize about what I would do if I won money in the lottery. Well, it's never going to become a reality if I don't do my part. Besides, some of the scratch off tickets look really fun.
- Research and find three charities I really want to support
- Sometimes I am hesitant to send money to charities, because I don't know enough about what they do with the money. So I want to find a few that I feel like I can support 100% with money and/or volunteer work.
- Post a video on YouTube
- I'm not 100% sure why I put this on the list, but it does hold a certain odd appeal. Since I don't normally take videos, I'll have to keep this one in the back of my mind.
- Take the kids out by myself for a fun day - completed May 28, 2011
- I really thought I would have done this already, but I guess it's too easy to let schedules and lack of planning get in the way. Plus a lack of car seats. But I really want to do this, so here it is.
- Organize the basement storage area - completed
- I don't want to have one of those scary dark basements, and I want to be able to find things down there. I bought the shelves last month, so that's a step in the right direction!
- See four plays/musicals that I haven't seen before - completed July 20, 2013
- I love going to the theatre, but like so many other things, it's easy to let it slide. This is just to make sure I keep doing things that I enjoy.
- Learn to cook a great meal from memory - completed
- Because everyone should be able to fix a good meal, and you can't always carry the cookbooks around with you.
- Take a cake decorating class - completed March 11, 2013
- I have wanted to take a cake decorating class ever since I was in middle school, but I just never have. There is no reason to keep putting it off.
- Try five new restaurants in Indy - completed September 8, 2012
- There are so many restaurants in this city, and it would be nice to find some local places to support.
- Build a snowman - completed January 1, 2013
- I've only built one snowman in my entire life. It was approximately 18 inches tall, because when you grow up in Memphis, that is what an entire front yard's worth of snow gets you. But now I live in a city that gets actual measurable snow, so I want to invite the kids over and build a respectable snowman.
- Consolidate my 401(k)'s
- Another one of those things I meant to do by now. The result of having held several jobs is several tiny retirement funds. I need to figure out exactly what I've got and get it all together in one place.
- Upload some of my photos to a photography site
- I think I've taken some pretty good pictures, so it would be interesting to put some of them out there and see what other people think. The ultimate would be if someone else wanted to buy or download one! I'm not holding my breath, but you never know.
- Attend a Roller Derby bout (replaces #32) - completed February 2, 2013
- Roller Derby looks like so much fun on TV and in the movies. I have to admit that the chance to get down and dirty appeals to me on a certain level, so at least going to watch it in person should be fun! And I've heard that Indy has a great team, so all the more reason to go.
- Have hair professionally colored (replaces #85) - completed March 21, 2013
- I've been coloring my hair for years, but I have always done it myself because I just couldn't justify the cost of paying to have it done. But I am curious to see if it comes out any better when it's professionally colored, and I have the money now to splurge.
